Following the tsunami disaster, a non-profit organization, "Nets and Boats asbl" was created by FRIENDS and DONORS to assist specifically the fishing communities of the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, especially in the Ambalantota region (Kalametiya beach).
The MISSION of "Nets and Boats asbl" is to encourage surviving fishermen to return to their traditional fishing methods -- catamaran rowing boats with manually operated fishing nets. This method has proven to be environmentally sustainable for the region. The fishermen work in teams of up to 40-50 men and each team nourishes as many as 150-200 family members.
Morally and psychologically, entire families must return as quickly as possible to their livelihoods, knowing that they have not been forgotten in their moment of sorrow and adversity.
FUNDS collected by "Nets and Boats asbl" will be allocated to replace (or repair) smashed catamarans and destroyed fishing nets. DONATIONS will be distributed through the appropriate representative of each fishing community based on its specific fishing requirements.
As a guideline, EACH DONATION of 50 Euros/USD will help ONE MEMBER of the fishing community to earn a living from the sea for the NEXT 10 YEARS (see Updates).
"Nets and Boats asbl" is a volunteer association dedicated to providing a helping hand to the fishing villages in Sri Lanka with a minimum amount of administrative costs. To assure complete TRANSPARENCY in all its transactions, a legal and notarized receipt will be required from all recipients in Sri Lanka. These receipts will be issued in both the Sinhala and English languages.
